Let me capture your imagination!

We also had the option to make a trailer as part of our film production. I decided to look at some trailers, so I could understand what I would need to achieve if I took on this task.

Above is the trailer for Donnie Darko!
The trailer obviously gives an idea of what the film is about and introduces the characters. As this film has an undefinable genre, and the trailer has to attract people to it, therefore show the audience something they recognise... meaning the trailer has similarities to that of a horror genre.
The trailer itself it compossed completely of shots from the film - lots of them. It, however, does not give the story away but shows the audience a clear outline of the main character Donnie.

Above is the trailer from eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
This trailer is very different to that of Donnie Darko. It combines shots from the film with an advert for Lacuna Inc this leads the view to wanting to know more. The advert for Lacuna Inc shows a very important part of the film but the storyline isn't really shown at all. This advert just introduces the concept and then the actors and shows you the style of the film. The shots of the film used are very short unlike in some trailers were whole conversations are heard. I think this trailer is succesful as in manages to show the film but in a very simplified way... this may draw a larger audience (it's not too complex).

Above the trailer for The Royal Tenenbaums!
As I have seen both Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I thought I should look at a trailer for a film I haven't seen. As, if I create a trailer nobody will have seen the film.
I thought this tralier was succesful as it clearly introduced each character and there position in the story. It also gave a clear view of what was going to happen in the film, but didn't show you the outcome of the situation established in the trailer. This lead me to want to watch it, not only to find out more about the interesting characters but also see the progression in the story. The trailer itself was held together and directed by a naration, this made it easier to understand.

Overall if I was to make a trailer I would first of all have to think about my idea as a whole for a film and then establish how I would convey that to the audience. It is also very important that trailers have a draw, that make the audience want to watch the film - you can make a really bad film look good with the right trailer. It is also important to show that your film is different to any film that you have seen before and not just copy a trailer (you, however must not forget about conventions).

I think creating a trailer would be quite difficult as they are usually about editing a large amount of footage into something short, not creating limited footage and trying to give the overview of a long piece. You also need lots of shots in different locations and times as films don't usually occur in the same day.
